Skin Health Foundations – Getting Through the Teen Years

The teen years can be a challenge with respect to skin care. Changes in hormone products can often cause more oil to be produced from the skin causing breakouts and other undesirable effects to the skin. Acne can also be a significant challenge during the teen years.

One of the most important (and difficult) things for teens to do is to avoid the temptation to pick at their blemishes. This can increase the chance of a breakout spreading to other parts of the face and it can even cause infections and scarring.

The teen years are a great time to find skin care products that work with your skin and to develop a daily routine that includes cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Other activities, such as exfoliation, can be added in a few times a month. The important thing is to be consistent in your routine. If you can incorporate healthy eating and regular exercise into your lifestyle, you’ll do wonders for your skin health. Remember that there are no skin care products that can compensate for poor nutrition, lack of sleep, smoking, or other harmful lifestyle choices.

Teens should resist the temptation to start tanning outdoors or in a tanning booth. Keeping a tan is not sustainable throughout your life, and any short-term benefits to your perceived appearance will easily be offset be a degradation in your skin health later in life. Trying to keep a tan while young will most certainly increase the amount of wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin you experience as you mature. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be pleased with your natural skin color. Wear sunscreen and protect your health!

Lastly, teens should be careful not to compare their complexion with models that appear in advertisements. These looks are often completely unrealistic, since these models have the advantage of dedicated makeup artists and image editors who clean up the picture using Photoshop.
